Fragments of Un-Certainty

“Fragments of Un-Certainty” is an exploration of the constructed nature of truth and the tenuous interplay between perception, manipulation, and meaning in the digital age.

People at the exhibition

The main exhibit is a 5 minute rolling video, compromising of visuell snippets, some from news, some from fiction, some recorded in the neighborhood, some generated using generation tools at the time of the exhibition. They are stitched to form a continuous story, about emotion, trust, longing und vulnerability.

At its heart, the installation invites visitors to step into a purpose-built wooden structure: a physical and symbolic retreat from the distractions of the external world. Inside, dim lighting and deliberate spatial design create an intimate, reflective environment where perception itself becomes the medium. A central projection alternates between meticulously curated scenes: historic speeches that echo with conviction, acted scenarios that simulate emotional immediacy, and AI-generated sequences that blur the boundary between authenticity and fabrication. Together, these fragments probe the visitor’s ability to discern, challenging their trust in the mediums through which reality is constructed.

During the exhibition more than 150 people noted down their opinion on AI, their hopes and their fear. The unique timepiece provides an overview of the landscape of emotions AI evokes currently and will be displayed in the Talk gallery on https://fckai.de/talk.

The project emerges from the cultural landscape of post-truth, at a time when fact and fiction merge seamlessly, and the currency of belief is leveraged to shape narratives and power structures. Drawing from phenomenology and media studies, “Fragments of Un-Certainty” critiques the mechanisms by which societal and personal realities are mediated, exposing the fragility of collective trust and the profound impact of subjective interpretation. The installation does not seek to moralize but to confront; it creates a space where visitors must grapple with their role as both interpreters and participants in the construction of meaning.

The wooden structure itself acts as an architectural allegory, representing the precarious balance between stability and fragility in our epistemological frameworks. Its simplicity belies the complexity of the experience within: shifting projections, layered soundscapes, and carefully orchestrated contrasts of light and shadow guide visitors through a sensory journey that oscillates between clarity and ambiguity. The structure embodies a sanctuary for introspection, yet its mutable interior design destabilizes certainty, making each encounter with the content both personal and ephemeral.

Through this dynamic interplay of space, sound, and image, “Fragments of Un-Certainty” transforms the viewer from passive observer to active participant. The installation’s design elicits visceral reactions, sparking doubt and reflection, while offering no definitive answers. It is in this liminality that the work thrives by confronting the audience with the unsettling realization that perception is both a gift and a vulnerability, a means of connection and a site of manipulation.

There was also a live image generation window installation that captured an image of the road in front of the exhibition space and transformed it into a futuristic flowery version of Berlin. See the resulting images from Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3.
